The Great Recasting or Guys! I'm Co-Hosting A Blogathon!

So dear followers,

What happens when my best blogging buddy Rianna [of Frankly, My Dear] posts this on her tumblr:
So what if there was some kind of a version of The Sound of Music (1961) from the 40s and Ingrid played Maria and Cary played Captain Von Trapp? GUYS CAN YOU SEE THAT? I can. Sort of. #No it would not be a mess...
You know what happens? I reply, "GENIUS. I don’t care if it would work or not I WOULD WANT TO SEE IT." Then we get to talking and start thinking how recasting movies would be so fun and how it would be a great blogathon. After that we get serious about the idea and actually agree to host a blogathon together, this is that blogathon:

The title is a variation of a 1965 Natalie Wood movie title "The Great Race"; and the basic theme of the blogathon is recasting modern (post-1965) movies with classic stars. For those interested, there are five rules to follow when writing your post:

1. Pick a movie that was made in between 1966 and today [i.e. Enchanted (2007)]
2. Change the year of production [i.e. (1953)]
3. Choose new leads from Classic Hollywood (note: I don't care what TCM says, Meryl Streep does not count as Classic Hollywood here) [i.e. Grace Kelly as Giselle, ect.]
4. Choose a new director from Classic Hollywood [i.e. Preston Sturges]
5. Explain why you think it would work [i.e. Have you ever seen that abso-bloomin'-lutely hysterical scene from High Society where Grace flutters about and says really ridiculous things like "I'm delighted, we have so much cake" - her in Enchanted would be like that whole scene stretched into an hour and a half. Plus gorgeous 50s costumes. And genius Preston Sturges. YES.]

Sound fun? I think so - not to mention there are so many ways you can go with the idea.

Oh, I forgot. A few more rules: please, since Rianna and I are hosting this blogathon together and are probably going to have quite a time keeping sign-ups organized anyway only leave an "I want to be a part of this" comment on ONE of our blogs
Also, if a case should arise where two bloggers were hoping to recast the same movie and this statement becomes necessary, we're allowing two blogs to recast the same movie.

Here's hoping Ri and I will be able to pull this thing off. The fact that I almost forgot to mention the dates doesn't seem to be a very bright beginning; but I'm only an amateur blogathon host-er anyway (this being my first one). That said, we'll be throwing this recasting party over the weekend of July 27-28 - that gives you a little more than a month to plan.

Here are the banners that Rianna made for our blogathon:

And I think that's all, so, I'm done talking now. Leave a comment if you're interested and tell what movie you want to recast. For the record, I call Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), which, according to that rule up there, means there's only one spot open if anyone else wants to recast Indy #1.

  1. Oh I'm so in on this one, sounds super fun! Unfortunately I don't know *that* many films made in post '66, but I'll give it a whack ;-)

Thanks to you both for hosting!
    David.

  4. I've already signed up at "Frankly, My Dear," but I may pull a twist on the concept and do two -- one of my own choosing, the other from suggestions made by readers of "Carole & Co." Both would, as you might guess, feature Carole Lombard in a leading role. This seems like a fun idea -- thanks for coming up with it!

  6. I have chosen a movie to recast at "Carole & Co." -- "Housesitter" (1992), with Lombard (of course) in the Goldie Hawn role. As for the film's other particulars, you'll have to wait six more weeks.

Incidentally, my entry today is on "The Great Recasting," along with an invitation to my readers to come up with a Carole vehicle from a post-1965 film. It's at http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/520083.html.

P.S. I note WarrenWilliam.com is recasting "Wall Street" (the idea of William saying "Greed is good" is a selling point all by itself). I hope some of the other sites dedicated to a particular star or director take part in this (and yes, "Gingerology," I mean you).

  7. Great! Thanks for telling us what movie you wanted.

And thank you so much for plugging our blogathon! That's fantastic of you.

  8. Count me in if I can do the 2001 version of Ocean's 11 as a silent movie.

  10. Put me down for remaking Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns (oh the casting I have for this is amazing!). Also, I put up something about this on my page, hopefully you'll gain a few more entrants.

  11. Hey! Can The Most Beautiful Fraud in the World join in on the fun? My wish is to recast Pulp Fiction as either Film Noir or Screwball Comedy or maybe MGM-esque Musical - or possibly as all three.

    1. Kevyn! Yay! I'm so glad you want to be a part! I'll put you down for Pulp Fiction. :)

  12. I'd love to participate Nat! One possible little glitch though: film-classics is really David's blog. So could I do something like my Tumblr? But if we can work that out, could I do 2009's The Proposal?

    1. Fantastic, Bailey! We can definitely work something out!

  13. You can count The Hollywood Revue in for this! A few months ago, I saw Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008) for the first time and thought about doing a post about which classic film actors I could picture in those roles. For some reason, I never got around to actually doing it, but this would be the perfect time for me to take that idea off the back burner.

  14. By the way, I don't know if you're at familiar with what I sometimes do at the Mythical Monkey, but this blogathon really tickled my fancy and wound up as one of those insane projects I sometimes become obsessed with -- the Ocean's 11 essay is done and clocks in at over a 1000 words, and now I'm working on a whole series of posters for a bunch of silent era "pre-makes." I'll post the former on July 27 and the latter on July 28.

    Hope you don't mind.

    Can't wait.
